BUILDING MOMENTUM
2019/20 ANNUAL REPORT.

WHO

WE

ARE.

We’re Engineering New Zealand – a membership organisation driven to bring engineering to life, so our members can engineer better lives for New Zealanders.

Covid-19 presented new and unprecedented challenges for Engineering New Zealand in 2019/20.

Our members remained our focus and we committed to supporting and delivering as much value as we could for them, when they needed it most. We found new ways to connect, shifted events online, kept doing everything we've always done for members and added extra support and advocacy for this tough time. We also said haere ra to our Chief Executive Susan Freeman-Greene. Susan was our Chief Executive for five years and over that time lifted the profile of Engineering New Zealand, connected us better with stakeholders and members, and helped create a platform for us to talk about why engineers are so critical to New Zealanders' everyday lives.

OUR STRATEGY REFRESHED.

This year we refreshed our strategy, setting out how to bring engineering to life over the next five years.  Our ambitions are still to strive for members to be credible, connected, influential and recognised for their contribution to society. Thriving has been added to this suite of ambitions, to give focus to creating a supportive engineering community for members throughout their career.

To help move us closer to achieving the five ambitions together, four goals have been set out for 2020-2025.

  • Provide engineers with tailored support throughout their career.

  • Develop a single quality mark that’s widely recognised and relevant for all engineering professionals.

  • Raise the bar across the profession in support of high-quality engineering and building trust and confidence in engineers and the critical work they do.

  • Digital systems are integrated, intuitive and enabling so that we can achieve our goals and provide outstanding customer service to members.

Advocating for the profession through Covid-19

Our advocacy was all about using our voice, and the collective expertise of our membership, to bring attention to the issues that mattered to you. When Covid-19 hit our shores, we gathered real-time feedback from members, firms, industry partners and other stakeholders on what was keeping you awake at night. We worked closely with ACE New Zealand and connected regularly with Chief Executives to understand issues around the pipeline of work and what firms needed. Together, we worked with the Construction Sector Accord and leveraged opportunities for joint discussion and intervention. We advocated strongly on the issues unearthed by our intelligence gathering. These included pipeline of work, deployment of shovel ready projects and procurement practices. We met with Ministers, spoke out publicly in the media and shared your concerns wide and far.

Sector Programmes

Important partnerships have been built on with Government, including the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) and Waka Kotahi – the New Zealand Transport Agency. Our team led a number of significant projects that were commissioned by our Government partners. Around 70 engineers were engaged into these projects to provide technical advice and services.

Our work with MBIE

  • The C5 Evidence Project – evidence of respective seismic assessment guidelines were gathered and analysed to inform MBIE’s decisions about their regulatory status.

  • The Low Damage Seismic Design project – market-ready seismic resilient building design information is being developed.

  • The Geotech Practice Series – we are finalising geotechnical engineering modules that underpin geotechnical design work in New Zealand.

  • The Seismic Risk Working Group – we managed leading structural and geotechnical engineers to develop recommendations for change in the building control system.

  • We are managing the review of a verification method for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning of buildings, which will help support MBIE’s Climate Change programme.

Our work with Waka Kotahi

We worked closely with Heavy Vehicle Engineers Group (HVE Group) and Waka Kotahi to design solutions for a future operating model for heavy vehicle specialist certifiers.

Recognising the best

The best engineers and engineering feats in New Zealand were celebrated with the inaugural ENVI Awards at Shed 10 in Auckland. Judges looked for individuals, teams and organisations that had been involved in significant or outstanding engineering projects that encouraged innovation, creativity, diversity and overall excellence in engineering and in ways that benefit society and the environment. Taking out the Supreme Award was NZ Transport Agency, KiwiRail & NCTIR Alliance for the Kaikōura Earthquake Recovery.

WHAT'S NEXT.

New Chief Executive

Starting November 2020
Richard Templer FEngNZ, will take up the Chief Executive role in November. He will bring a wealth of knowledge from his Chief Executive position at Manawatū District Council. We welcome Richard to the Engineering New Zealand family and look forward to working closely with him to bring engineering to life.
